These converted warehouses bring resident artists, exhibits and performance space together. Here you'll find everything from "deconstructions" of a picket fence to Fearless Hair Productions. Every exhibit is designed to provoke, awaken and amuse. The non-profit incubator also publishes the Traffic Report, an avant garde poetry and photography magazine. Admission is free; some of the galleries are more easily accessible than others for disabled patrons.

Located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, this ecological reserve is great for both tide pool exploring and picnicking. Along with its namesake, this area has dozens of other fascinating and federally protected seaside dwellers. The prime time to explore Abalone Cove Shoreline Park is winter, especially December and January, since the tide pool activity seems to be at its peak. Nearby Smuggler's Cove has been one of the area's most popular nude beaches for many years.

Even non-couch-potatoes will be suitably impressed by the posh facade, ample interiors and the loads of trivia that encompass this huge space, established in 1927. The hub of everything that's Oscar-related, this venue houses the Academy Gallery, Grand Lobby Gallery, Samuel Goldwyn Theater and Academy Little Theater, all of which hold various temporary exhibitions on everything you could possibly want to know about the big screen.

Adamson House

The exquisite Spanish-style Adamson House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1930 for the daughter of Frederick and May Rindge, who owned a massive chunk of Malibu at the turn of the century. Above all else, the home is a treasure trove of tile-work that is incorporated almost everywhere in the house, from the fountains to the dog shower. There is also a small museum next to the house, which features exhibits on local history. On rainy days it is advisable to call to make sure the tours are still on.
